Service note
Roberto Bassi is Full Professor of Plant Physiology (Bio-04). He deals with bioenergetics of plants and unicellular algae and in particular with photosynthesis and photoprotection of plants and unicellular algae.
His research aims to improve the photosynthetic yield of plants and to make them more resistant to environmental stresses to allow a better agricultural yield and a greater diffusion of plants in arid and semi-desert areas. In addition, it optimizes the chlorophyll content of plants in order to increase the albedo (reflection of incident radiation) and decrease heat production for environmental temperature control.
With a similar strategy, it proceeds to engineer unicellular algae for the direct production of biofuel and/or the production of recombinant enzymes active in the degradation of lignocellulose to sugars.
On these topics he has published 280 articles in international journals. His H-factor is 105. He is a member of the Accademia dei Lincei, of the EMBO (European Molecular Biology Organization), of the European Academy, of the Accademia dei Georgofili and of the National Academy of Engineering. Bioenergetica della produttività primaria: fotosintesi e respirazione La produttività primaria degli organismi autotrofi (Piante, alghe, muschi) dipende dalla fotosintesi attraverso cui la CO2 atmosferica viene fissata in biomassa con l'energia della luce assorbita. Mentre le pinate superiori sono organismi autotrofi obbligati, alghe e muschi sono mixotrofi e possono quindi sia crescere su sostanze organiche che usare l'energia della luce. La ricerca studia i meccanismi della fotosintesi, della respirazione e le loro sinergie. Biologia, fisiologia e biochimica delle piante

Biofisica dei sistemi fotosintetici La ricerca studia i meccanismi fondamentali dell'assorbimento della luce da parte dei sistemi fotosintetici ed la fotoprotezione delle strutture biologiche (cloroplasto) durante il processo. La ricerca coinvolge misure spettroscopiche risolte in tempo (micro s, femto s) che rivelano la formazione delle specie eccitate della clorofilla e dei carotenoidi, il loro decadimento e i processi foto-ossidativi ad essi associati. Vengono costruiti sistemi sintetici sperimentali in piante, alghe e muschi attraverso genome editing e transgenesi per rispondere a questioni sui processi fondamentali. Biotecnologia delle alghe unicellulari Le alghe unicellulari sono microbi e sono facilmente ingegnerizzabili per cambiarne la composizione e/o le attività metaboliche al fine di produrre composti di interesse come, per esempio, biocombustibili, coloranti alimentari, anti-ossidanti o proteine ricombinanti come enzimi industriali o antigeni come vaccini. In questa ricerca perseguiamo la domesticazione delle alghe per questi scopi utilizzando tecniche genetiche (mutagenesi. evoluzione diretta), la transgenesi o l'editing genomico.
