Overview

The current Department of Biotechnology is a merger of the previous Biotechnology Department established in 1998 and the Department of Science, Technology and Wine and Vine Markets established in 2007.

The Department has 56 academic staff (13 full professors, 24 associate professors and 19 researchers) and 13 non-academic staff (administrative employees, lab technicians and other staff). Other collaborators also contribute to the Department's activities, including approximately 117 PhD students and young graduates on research scholarships or fixed-term research contracts.

The Department of Biotechnology’s fields of research include plant biology, plant genetics, plant physiology, biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, materials science, structural biology, microbiology, food technology, biochemical systems, functional genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics, immunology, environmental biotechnology, viticulture and vineyard ecology, agricultural chemistry, oenological chemistry and sensory analysis.

Department locations

The Bachelor’s degrees in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, the Master’s degrees in Agri-Food Biotechnology and Molecular and Medical Biotechnology and the interuniversity Master’s degree in Science and Technology of Bio and Nanomaterials take place at Ca’ Vignal campus.

The Department has another site in San Floriano di San Pietro in Cariano, Villa Lebrecht, where the Bachelor’s degree in Viticultural and Oenological Science and Technology is taught. Both of the sites have classrooms, teaching labs and a library as well as research labs with modern equipment.
