Learning outcomes

Module: Chimica organica (laboratorio)
-------
The course is part of the Organic Chemistry examination. The laboratory has the aim of introducing the basic methodology in organic chemistry, of separation, purification and identification of natural organic compounds and carbohydrates

Module: Chimica organica (teoria)
-------
The course is aimed to provide students with the basic organic chemistry which will be needed to understand the fundamental processes of biochemistry. An important goal of the course is also to introduce the first year students to the scientific method, so that molecules behaviour and reaction mechanisms can be deduced from the knowledge of acidic-basic and other physical properties. The course is specifically tailored to biotechnology students as the highest attention will be dedicated to the organic chemistry of biological systems.

Syllabus

Module: Chimica organica (laboratorio)
-------
1 experience: Nucleophilic substitution SN1. How to purify through extraction procedures. use of the refraction index
2 experience: Separation of a ternary mixture containing compounds with different acid-base properties. Purification through crystallization. determination of the melting point.
3 experience: Extraction of caffeine from tea leaves.
4 experience: Extraction of coloured pigments from spinach leaves. Characterisation through TLC.
5 experience: identification of carbohydrates

Module: Chimica organica (teoria)
-------
Structure and bonding in organic molecules
Intermolecular forces
Funtional-group approach
Stereoisomerism
Conformational analysis
Introduction to the physical-organic chemistry
Acidic-basic properties of organic molecules
Principal reaction mechanisms
Organic chemistry of compounds of biological interest:carbohydrates, peptides, proteins, lipids, nucleic acids

Assessment methods and criteria

Module: Chimica organica (laboratorio)
-------
see Organic Chemistry course

Module: Chimica organica (teoria)
-------
The students will pass a written examination, aiming at verifying the knowledge and comprehension of the basic principles of organic chemistry in addition to the capability to solve problems dealing with subjects treated during the course
