Dr Astegno is interested in the characterization of enzymes, their interaction, regulation and inhibition as a therapeutic strategy. She is expert in the study of enzymes dependent on pyridoxal 5’-phosphate, that include most of the enzymes involved in amino acid metabolism both in mammals and bacteria. Presently, her research focuses on the study of the enzymes from both parasitic organisms (Toxoplasma gondii) and bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) involved in cysteine biosynthesis (specially those regulating the Transsulfuration pathway) and their exploitation as target for innovative drugs. She is also involved in the biochemical characterization of cyclosporin A-binding cyclophilins from the parasite T.gondii which have received increasing attention for the development of alternative therapeutic strategies against protozoa mediated diseases. Moreover, her research interests concern calcium sensors (calmodulin and centrins) and the mechanisms by which these proteins regulate complex molecular processes in different organisms.
