Silvia Lampis si occupa di microbiologia ambientale e biotecnologie microbiche industriali e ambientali. I principali interessi di ricerca riguardano le interazioni tra microorganismi (batteri e funghi) con metalli e metalloidi, e composti organici contaminanti in ecosistemi terrestri, e relative applicazioni biotecnologiche.

Agricultural (Soil) Microbiology - Environmental Microbiology - Non-Food Microbial Biotechnology The main areas of interest concern the study of either single microbial species (both bacterial and fungal) or complex microbial populations in relation to their activities wherever significant in terms of environmental impact. Attention therefore is paid to the microbial catalysis within the biogeochemical cycles, to the influence of microbial metabolism on the characteristics of soils and water bodies, to the functional interaction between microorganisms and plants, to the role of microorganisms in the detoxification of environmental matrices contaminated by organic compounds, for the possible exploitation of these microbial catalysts in the treatment of industrial residues/wastewaters through more environmentally friendly processes. Microbially synthesized nanomaterials The interest focuses on the synthesis of nanomaterials (nanoparticles or nanotubes) by microorganisms such bacteria (including actinomycetes) and fungi (both molds and yeasts), and the possible exploitation of these bio-synthesized nanostructures in different applicative fields (e.g. to hinder the formation on or to eradicate microbial biofilms from thr surfaces). Attention is given (1) to microbial strains - both already available and new - capable for instance to induce nanoparticle formation by transforming metals and metalloids, and (2) to the understanding of the mechanisms of microbial nanoparticle biosynthesis, including the conditions for the control of their sizes.
