The aim of the course is to provide the students with the knowledge of one of the most important methodology in the field of life science, namely Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). The course will deal with the basic proinciples of NMR and its applications aimed at the investigation, at molecular level, of: i) structure-function correlation of biological macromolecules, ii) protein-protein, protein-small molecule, protein-membrane interactions, iii) mechanism of protein folding, iv) molecular dynamics, v) complex systems “in cell”, vi) in vitro and in vivo imaging techniques
Basics of NMR: spins, Larmor frequency, Chemical shift, J-coupling, NOE
-acquisition of a 1D NMR spectrum
-product operator formalism
-T1 T2 and the correlation time
-Multidimensional experiments
-Protein characterisation
-H/D exchange and protein folding
-Interaction studies
-in cell NMR
-principles of NMR imaging
The examination include a written test to evaluate the level of knowledge reached during the course, relative to the interpretation of 1d and 2D spectra.
After passing the written test, the students will have an oral examination
