Learning outcomes

The course is divided into 3 interdisciplinary laboratory modules that tackle a topic of biological relevance with complementary approaches e techniques. The main purpose of the course is to offer the student the overview on how a scientific project is conceived around a relevant theme for health and how it is developed by different research teams holding complementary expertise.

Specifically, the project will range from high-throughput screening aimed at hypothesis generation to the functional validation of potential targets. The GENETICS module will provide expertise on experimental approaches and bioinformatics analysis necessary to identify genetic variants associated with specific pathological conditions and their validation. The BIOINFORMATICS module will introduce the computational methods used today to predict the effect of variants associated with diseases on the structure/function of proteins. The student will learn the state-of-the-art computational methods to predict the effect of mutants from the sequence and structure of proteins. The module of PROTEIN ENGINEERING will provide the students with specific information on the principles and techniques used in protein engineering for the production of recombinant proteins and for the introduction of specific mutations into proteins in order to investigate in vitro the impact of an amino acid change (specific disease-associated mutations) on protein function.
