The course is dedicated to the definition of the concept of BIOREFINERY and its impact in the field of industrial biotechnology and bioeconomy in general. The three main steps of a biorefinery process (feedstock preparation, fermentation, down-stream processing for product recovery) will be the basis of the teaching activity. Several examples of fine chemicals production from dedicated crops or agro-/industrial-/civil- waste will be given during the course.
Program:
- The concept of biorefinery for the valorisation of biomass of different origin (dedicated crops, refuse, waste) into bio-molecules of economic value in the framework of circular bioeconomy
- Feedstock preparation (pre-treatments) by means of chemical-physical and biological processes
- Biotecnological processes for the conversion of biomass of different origin into high added value bio-based products (type of process, type of bioreactor, facilities, monitoring)
- Down stream processing for recovery and purification of bio-molecules of interest
