Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to provide the knowledge to understand : a) the mechanisms underlying the genesis of biomedical signals; b) the properties of the main electrophysiology and imaging techniques used in physiology.

Syllabus

Program

• Introduction to the methods and tools of investigation in physiology.
• Electrical properties of cell membranes: ion channels, Nernst’s equation, passive electrical properties of the membrane, the genesis of resting membrane potential, the action potential and its mode of propagation.
• Electrical and chemical synapses. Synaptic plasticity.
• Intracellular and extracellular recordings. The patch clamp and the analysis of the ionic currents of single channel. Examples of recordings of single cell and brain slices.
• The anatomy-functional organization of the nervous system.
• Experience-dependent plasticity of the nervous system.
• Immunohistochemical techniques.
• Fluorescence, confocal and two-photon microscopy. Calcium imaging.
• Electromyogram. Electroencephalogram and evoked potentials.
• Elements of psychophysics.
