Learning outcomes

Module: laboratorio
The "lab" session of the course of Biochemical Engineering is part of the whole course: it is shared between the lab activity and the calculation exercises in classroom, including the basic schemes of chemimcal and biochemical plants

Module: theoretical fundamentals
The main aim of the course is to give to students the tools for the comprehension of the transport phenomena and mass and energy balance, reaction kinetics and bioreactors, which are foundamentals for the process engineering of biochemical plants.


Module: laboratorio
The course is based on some experimental activities dealing with the determination of the inter-phase mass transfer (oxygen) and some numerical excerises about the transport phenomena for mass, energy and momentum.

Module: theoretical fundamentals
1. Introduction

Preview of some operation units and applications in biotechnological plants for the production of primary and secondary metabolites.

2. Mass and energy balances

The following themes will be considered:
- mass and energy balance in biotechnolgical processes
- energy requests for aerobic and anaerobic bioprocesses
- reaction kinetics and fundamentals of mass balances in bioreactors

3. Transport phenomena

The following themes will be considered:
- mass transport phenomena
- energy transport phenomena
- momentum transport phenomena

Assessment methods and criteria

Module: laboratorio
Written report, including basic schemes of chemical plants

Module: Theoretical fundamentals
Two written tests will be given
