Learning outcomes

Module: Parte generale
-------
The course will provide basic knowledge about the most important grape diseases and pathogens, necessary to achieve a good understanding of plant-pathogen interactions, dignostic approaches and of the main priciples of disease management.

Module: Laboratorio
-------
Students will be trained to approach a plant disease diagnosis, with traditional and advanced techniques.

Syllabus

Module: Parte generale
-------
Basic concepts on disease. Pathogenicity and virulence factors.Plant-pathogen interactions: susceptibility and resistance. General overwiew of biotic and abiotic disease agents. Description of symptoms. Biology and disease cycle of main groups of plant pathogens: fungi, bacteria, viruses and phytoplasmas. Abiotic stresses that commonly cause diseases on grape.
Basic concepts of epidemiology, mathematical models of epidemics, with a few examples related to grape diseases. Approaches to diagnosis. Traditional and advanced diagnostic techniques. Plant disease management with traditional, integrated and biological control practices. Phytosanitary legislation and certification.

Module: Laboratorio
-------
Symptom analysis and description. Isolation in pure culture of fungal and bacterial plant pathogens. Microscopic observation of vegetative fungal structures. Pathogenicity test of bacterial isolates. Inoculation of indicator plants for viral disease diagnosis. E.L.I.S.A, serological test for virus identification. Use of PCR for pathogen diagnosis.
