RESEARCH

My research activities focus on the understanding of the interactions between engineered nanoparticles and biological systems and in the exploitation of this knowledge in the area of nanomedicine, bioimaging, and clinical diagnostics. To achieve these goals, we use a broad variety of synthetic approaches and of analytical techniques.
Our work is highly multidisciplinary:

  • we design and synthesize molecules to be employed as surface modifiers/coatings for metallic nanoparticles
  • we develop bioconjugation techniques to functionalize nanoparticles with peptides, glycopeptides, proteins, and oligonucleotids, depending on the envisioned application
  • we carry out a careful and thorough physicochemical characterization of the synthesized nanomaterials
  • we investigate the interaction of our nanoparticles with biological systems in vitro and in vivo with the support of a number of national and international collaborators.

NEWS

May 2023. The website of the SynMech project is now online: follow us!
18th February 2023. We are part of the HE project SynMechA synaptic mechanogenetic technology to repair brain connectivity (Project ID: 101099579 HORIZON-EIC-2022-PATHFINDEROPEN call). The project has officially started on the 1st of February. At UniVR we will develop magnetoplasmonic nanoparticles to stimulate and regulate neuronal circuits under pathological conditions.

18th Novemer 2021. Would you like to know more about engineered nanomaterials interacting with the immune system? The website of the DIRNANO project is online!

September 2020. We are part of the project “DIRNANO: Directing the immune response through designed nanomaterials” (MSCA-ITN-ETN - European Training Networks funding scheme) officially starting on October 1st, 2020!

BIO

Roberto Fiammengo studied Chemistry at the University of Padua in Italy and received a Ph.D. from the University of Twente in the Netherlands. In 2003, he moved to Germany where he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Pharmacy and Molecular Biotechnology of the University of Heidelberg and later as a group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Stuttgart. In 2012 he moved back to Italy at the Center for Biomolecular Nanotechnologies of the Italian Institute of Technology in Lecce where he was a researcher – team leader until August 2020. From the 1st of September 2020 he is an associate professor of organic chemistry at the University of Verona.
